Are you tired of the fear & anxiety the U.S. election 2016 is producing? This declaration of independence from American politics offers a Scripture-based perspective and 11 Bible verses that bring hope and encouragement for Christians who are feeling like aliens in exile.

Declaration of Independence from American Political Angst

In the course of a Christian patriot’s history:

when supporting a candidate requires one to separate from whatever is true, honorable, right, and pure;
when the rhetoric inhibits the pursuit of whatever is lovely, commendable, excellent, and praiseworthy;
when the discussion of life and liberty incites Christian comrades to fire on each other;
when the line one determined should not be crossed continues to be breached and moved;

It becomes necessary to dissolve the influence of a broken political system that ravages the heart, plunders the hope, and burns the time.

It is the right of the individual to throw off the tyranny of fear and abolish the myth of a Christian nation, affirming God works through evil and exile — not just light and liberty.

I do solemnly publish and declare, that this American Christian is — and of right ought to be — a resident alien here whose true citizenship is in heaven.

With that in view:

I pledge allegiance to Christ alone and trust my Creator with my unalienable rights.
I fix my hope on my inheritance in heaven, which cannot be taxed away.
I choose the Gospel and the Church before, over, and above any platform or party.
I trust the Spirit who convicts, not a court considered supreme.

I will:

serve my country and seek its good by serving my God and seeking first His kingdom.
pray for my leaders and submit to whatever the government establishes, knowing all authorities are established by God.
speak of my personal convictions without casting convicting statements toward others who are convinced otherwise.
vote my conscience without sacrificing my principles and trust God with the rest, keeping my confidence firmly placed in Him and not the person who receives my vote.

I will NOT:

confuse Christianity with a side of the aisle, a movement, or any ‘ism,’ including conservatism.
diminish what the Word preaches simply to support a candidate who promises to preserve the Constitution.
expect the message of the Cross to be anything but counter-cultural in a country whose corporate values contradict everything Christ taught.

I will not look to a morally bankrupt politician to protect my freedom to worship.

My Lord is more than able to preserve this liberty.
But.If.Not. and my nation becomes a modern day Babylon, I still will not bow, trusting He will strengthen me to stand.
If Daniel and the others could thrive in exile and impact evil leaders with their witness of a God who was worth dying for, I can do no less if called to sacrifice for the one true Kingdom.

With this Declaration of Independence

from the anxiety and hypocrisy of the American political system,
and the misplaced trust in and focus on its candidates,
and with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence —
I pledge to Him — and Him alone — my life, my fortune, and my sacred honor.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul. Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation.
(1 Pet. 2:11-12, NASB)

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.

For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?

For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”
(Dan. 3:16-18, ESV)

Our Father who is in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

    So brave. Thank you Christi, for helping us see Truth, see Him, in all of it. It feels so messy sometimes, but really, it’s not. Truth remains unchanged. Standing right along with you.

      Thankful for warrior sisters like you who are speaking of courage and standing when so many speak of fear and giving in. Blessed to travel this road alongside you!

    Bravo, Christi! You’ve put into words so many of my thoughts over these last few months, especially. I appreciate having blogging friends like you who encourage us not to give in to the fear that so many fellow Christians seem to be peddling. We have but one Hope, in Christ alone. And He set the example for us by spurning the political offices of the world in favor of His Father’s Kingdom. Thy will be done, Lord.
